Pulsatilla Vulgaris-Pasque Flower

One of my favorite early Spring flowers! The pulsatilla, or Pasque flower. The name Pasque relates to the time of year that is blooms in early Spring and Easter. Though these were taken on Apil 29, much later than the holiday of Easter due to our snows. From Wikipedia: "The genus Pulsatilla contains about 33 species of herbaceous perennials native to meadows and prairies of North America, Europe, and Asia. Common names include pasque flower (or pasqueflower), wind flower, prairie crocus, Easter Flower, and meadow anemone. Several species are valued ornamentals because of their finely-dissected leaves, solitary bell-shaped flowers, and plumed seed heads. The showy part of the flower consists of sepals, not petals." My favorite part of this plant is how fuzzy and soft it is...it is as soft as it looks! And the blossoms last for a long time. Even after they are finished, these flowers leave interesting seed pods behind. A very special plant indeed. If you are hiking in the mountains and foothills here in Colorado, they cover the hillsides in the Spring as a native plant. Keep your eyes out for this unique Spring plant.

Photographs of Spring

Spring is my favorite time to photograph the natural world. Although this Spring was a little strange with over 4 feet of snow in April alone! Sadly, the blossoms are somewhat confused and I think many trees and shrubs will not show off their flowers this year. But I am keeping my eyes open for signs of new life in the gardens. First I will leave you with the week I planted vegetable seeds, and then the next day the weather took a dramatic shift. Fortunately, the weather is now warm, if not hot, and spring is finally here! PS Our subject was sick with a fever the day I took this one before snow! Thus, the unhappy face.

Helleborus Orientalis is the botanical name of this early blooming shade perennial. it is more commonly known as the Lenten Rose. In the English speaking world they are known as the Lenten Rose but are not roses at all. They are actually of the Butter Cup family or Ranunculaceae. Their flowers bloom during the Easter celebration of Lent, leading the vernal procession of color in the shady areas of perennial gardens. They are an amazing plant and flower that start blooming in winter! One of the only plants that do and they last for months. Very special.

Christian Science Monitor

At times I freelance for the Christian Science Monitor. This is an international news organization that delivers global coverage via its website, weekly magazine, daily news briefing, and email newsletters. Last week I photographed at Mountain View High School in Loveland, CO. They are changing the way information is taught to high school kids and there is a lot of study going on into how this is working. Article will be published in their weekly magazine. Her are some photos of the students at work.
