Garrison Roots - Rest in Peace

Just learned of the passing of one of my more influential art professors, Garrison Roots. He was my sculpture professor and advisor

while getting my BFA at CU Boulder. He was the most challenging of professors in the best of ways and a brilliant artist. He bravely fought pancreatic cancer for 5 years and passed away on the winter solstice. He will be missed by thousands of students.

A New Year's Eve filled with ritual. Bruce and Marcela provided a great evening of letting go of the old and setting intention for new wishes for the new year. Including a walk around the block with a suitcase with the hopes of travel in 2012 and eating 12 grapes to mark each month. We also burned an effigy filled with our intentions to let go of as well as putting our hopes for 2012 into glass jars in a wall.

Day one of a 2 day shoot with the Adventure Rabbi to celebrate the bat mitzvah of Autumn who's family came in from TX. Rabbi Jamie Korngold

takes people on hikes into nature to celebrate spirituality through the outdoors outside of the walls of the temple. We took a hike to the Bluebell Shelter in Chautaqua and started the ceremonies there. They prayed, sang and made s'

The paperwhite narcissus is the December birth flower. Legend states that after Narcissus died, Apollo turned him into the flower narcissus. Paperwhites are grown from bulbs and are native to the Mediterranean.

The paperwhite narcissus is a cousin to the daffodil flower. This flower is easy to force bloom indoors. The strong scent is either loved or hated. The paperwhite is the only narcissus variety that does not require a cold and dark period to bloom. The paperwhite is the most popular variety of narcissus. Another dear octogenarian friend passed away today. Frank Francisconi- a sweet Italian, WW II vet who was very proud of that! He was my garden friend from CT where I lived many years ago. We worked together for years at an amazing estate on the ocean in Waterford, CT. cutting back roses, deadheading, and eating tomatoes out of the garden; biting into them just like an apple. He took care of their glass, historical greenhouse and grew spectacular hibiscus all winter long. He worked for the same family gardening for over 65 years. His simple ways and deep appreciation for flowers and big bright blooms will surely be missed by many. He was dear to me and I am grateful for this photo taken on a recent summer visit.

A Good Day for a Plank-Boulder, CO

Forget purse dogs, Hummers and star tattoos, when it comes to the celebrity world's latest craze, 'everybody's doing it' seems to be an understatement. So what is it that's got everybody from Rosario Dawson to Justin Bieber getting down (literally) this time? Planking. So here we have local celebrity Miriam Eckert planking for us in her gorgeous kitchen in Boulder CO.

No it's not pirate slang or a crude euphemism, it is literally the act of laying light as a feather, stiff as a board -- like a plank of wood.

But before we delve too far into the art of laying still, that so many celebrities have already mastered, let's first engage in a bit of planking 101 -- from what we've learned there are several important planking rules to live by. One can plank on anything and everything. One should enlist a friend to photograph said planking. One must post said photograph to every and any social networking site with a certain level of strategic apathy. There is an ancient teaching story about two Buddhist monks walking along a river in silence. They have a vow of chastity which requires that they never speak to or ever touch a woman.

As they were walking up the river, they came upon a woman who was desperately trying to get across the river because her child is on the other side. It's a fast-flowing river and she is frightened to cross it by herself.

One of the monks walks over to her and offers his help. He picks her up and with the strength that he carries in his legs that walk mountains, valleys and streams, he carries her across the river, sets her down, comes back to join his fellow and they begin again to walk in silence.

About two hours later, the second monk says to the first, "I can't believe you carried that woman across the river. I can't believe you touched her. I can't believe that you broke your vows..." The other monk simply looks at his companion and says, "I put her down two hours ago. You are still carrying her."

Today, let's consider what are we still carrying that really isn't happening anymore. Let's put it down. When we put that down, we now have our hands heart and our mind available to what's here --right now.

If you have not read about "Yellow" here before, she is back for the 5th year in a row. While in a significant life transition, I discovered the book "Hope for the Flowers" which is one of my favorite story books of all time. It is a book about hope and promise and realizing there is "more to life." Every year since I moved into my Boulder home, "Yellow" has shown up in my yard. One single yellow caterpillar who visits us each summer to remind us of hope. It feels like magic!

Colorado Mountain Ranch, Camp

Colorado Mountain Ranch is a great camp in Gold Hill, Colorado. Did some photography for them this past week and had a great time. The wonderful owner, Lynn Walker, drives the bus, and the whole staff and property are a feel good, old fashioned feeling camp in the mountains. All the campers eat lunch under the family tree as you see here. The 4 mile fire hit them on their edges and they are currently rebuilding the barn. The fire even hit the posts of the sign but the place is green and amazing now.

Grand Lake Hike and Luck

A morning to explore Grand Lake area between the rehearsal dinner and the wedding lead to a lovely hike to Adams Falls and also

back near the AA Barn outside of town. Gorgeous wild flowers abound as well as a lucky sighting of a pair of hawks feeding their young. Only saw it once and was lucky to be in the right place at this time!
